Descripción: Se caracteriza por el mayor tamaño de las piezas sobre las que se ejerce la acción cinegética y no en general por la forma o modalidad de la cacería. Se ejercita en España sobre una serie de especies como el jabalí, el corzo, el ciervo o venado, el gamo, el muflón, la cabra montés y el arrui, aunque en Alborea sólo se caza el Jabalí. En España es el jabalí la pieza de caza mayor que soporta más presión cinegética mientras que la más representativa y específica de la fauna cinegética mayor española es la cabra montés, especie única en el mundo. Últimamente el rececho del corzo está alcanzando una gran popularidad basada en la expansión territorial y poblacional de esta especie. La modalidad más difundida y más tradicionalmente española es la montería. También es muy popular entre los cazadores españoles la espera o aguardo a los jabalíes.
Especies cinegéticas de caza mayor en Alborea: Jabalí
Modalidades de caza mayor: La montería: Es la montería la más clásica y tradicional modalidad de caza mayor española. En ella se abaten generalmente jabalíes y venados, aunque también otras especies como el gamo y el muflón. En un monte o mancha de varios cientos de hectáreas se dispone una serie de armadas, o líneas de puestos con cazadores, que rodean y cubren el terreno. Según su particular ubicación en la mancha las armadas reciben diversos nombres (cuerda es la más alta; sopié la más baja; traviesa la que atraviesa o se encuentra generalmente en medio de la mancha). Desde un extremo determinado, o desde más de uno, se procede a la suelta de las rehalas que, conducidas por sus respectivos perreros, batirán la mancha en diversas direcciones con el objeto último de que las piezas de caza en su huida traten de atravesar las líneas de monteros o sean avistadas por estos. A pesar de la apariencia de acción muy planificada, lo cierto es que la montería es una modalidad de caza que requiere de la máxima observación, atención, silencio y puntería (en blanco móvil) por parte del cazador y que ofrece inmensas posibilidades de escapatoria a jabalíes y venados. Es posible todavía en la montería tradicional española y en algunas zonas de nuestra geografía observar a los rehaleros vestidos a la antigua usanza y provistos de trabucos.
La batida: La batida admite numerosas similitudes con la montería tradicional española aunque algunas diferencias la caracterizan como una modalidad distinta. La batida puede realizarse con o sin perros (a diferencia de la montería donde la utilización de rehalas es esencial) y el terreno o monte suele batirse en una sola dirección y hacia o en provecho de una sola línea o armada de cazadores. El terreno batido suele ser menor que en la montería así como el número de escopetas. En ocasiones, como se ha señalado, los perros son sustituidos por personas que profiriendo gritos y haciendo ruido tratan de conducir las piezas en su huida hacia la línea de cazadores. Jabalíes, zorros, lobos y ocasionalmente en algunas Comunidades venados, gamos o corzos constituyen piezas habituales en las batidas. El gancho, muy popular en nuestros montes, puede ser conceptuado como una pequeña batida practicada por unos pocos cazadores y con un escaso número de perros o incluso sin ellos.
La espera: La espera o aguardo es, junto a la montería, la modalidad más practicada para cazar el jabalí en España, especialmente durante los atardeceres y las noches de los meses de verano. Comprobadas las querencias, los pasos "fijos", los lugares de alimento o baña de los animales, el cazador esperará oculto a una distancia prudencial teniendo siempre en cuenta la dirección y el sentido del viento. Esta modalidad requiere de una gran paciencia y silencio por parte de sus practicantes y es básicamente nocturna y solitaria por lo que las noches de luna llena son muy propicias para practicarla.
