Descripción:

Posee las partes superiores del cuerpo de color azul oscuro metálico con la frente y la garganta castaño-rojizo. La cola es ahorquillada con las dos rectrices externas muy largas, especialmetne en el macho.

Año tras año esta ave tiene la costumbre de regresar al mismo nido o zona en la que se ha reproducido por primera vez; incluso los jóvenes se sienten aquerenciados por los lugares donde nacieron. Nidifica tanto en solitario como en colonias, ocasionalmente acompañada de aviones comunes y golondrinas dáuricas. Construye un nido de barro en forma de cazoleta que fija a paredes y vigas de los establos, aleros de tejados, porches y puentes de carreteras. Se ha comprobado que en la Región, puede llegar a realizar cuatro , y a veces más, puestas. Los jóvenes duermen en el nido varios días después de haber realizado sus primeros vuelos y, posteriormente, se agrupan en bandos que duermen en cañaverales y zonas de eneas. A finales de verano, jóvenes y adultos se agrupan en número espectacular posándose en los cables para, de pronto, desaparecer en el cielo todas a la vez camino de sus cuarteles de invierno.

 

Alimentación:

Para su alimentación, aprovecha  los cereales con que el hombre ceba el ganado y las semillas  que integra la dieta de las aves de corral, por lo que es frecuente verlo sobrevolar, además de las cosas, los depósitos de cereales, tinglados de estaciones ferroviarias, silos o cualquier lugar donde se almacenen granos. Pero si la dieta no es solo granívora, ya que puede incluir verduras tiernas, frutas y hortalizas cultivadas e incluso las sobras de comida. Otro componente de su, es alimentación especialmente en la época de crianza, son los insectos y arañas.

 

Ecosistema:

Se localiza preferentemente en campo abierto cerca de zonas cultivadas aunque, en menor cantidad, también puede encontrarse en ciudades y pueblos. Gusta de lugares con charcas, estanques, etc.

Nidifica en la Región, algunos individuos de esta especie migradora invernan en África del Sur. Llega a la Región durante el mes de enero y suele abandonarla en septiembre.
