Descripción: La morfología de este gekónido se caracteriza por su cabeza ancha, de hocico redondeado y ojos prominentes con pupila vertical y estriada; cuerpo aplanado dorsoventralmente; extremidades bien desarrolladas con amplias expansiones laterales dispuestas en cada dedo en forma de láminas transversales provistas a su vez de diminutos ganchitos que se fijan o adhieren a las más insignificantes rugosidades de las superficies por las que se desplaza, y cola de la misma longitud aproximada que cabeza y cuerpo juntos. Las partes superiores presentan abundantes escamas granulares y una coloración variable entre el pardo oscuro (fundamentalmente, durante las horas del día que reciben la luz del sol) y el gris claro (por la noche), además de manchas irregulares negruzcas que llegan a formar bandas transversales más patentes en los jóvenes. El vientre es blanco amarillento.En los meses de abril y junio tienen lugar las dos puestas que llega a realizar la hembra de esta especie.
Alimentación: Los invertebrados que más frecuentemente consume son las arañas, los escarabajos, las hormigas, las mariposas, los saltamontes y las libélulas, y entre sus predadores destacan el erizo, el mochuelo, la lechuza común, el cernícalo primilla y la comadreja.
Ecosistema: Especie ligada notablemente al medio humano, se la puede observar frecuentemente sobre las paredes y techos de casas, muros o tapias, tejados, ruinas, montones de piedras y troncos de árboles. Su período de actividad queda trasladado de las horas del día durante la primavera, a la noche en verano y vuelta al día entrado el otoño. Durante los meses fríos del invierno permanecen escondidas y aletargadas, llegando a salir al exterior únicamente en días templados o soleados. Detecta sus presas al acecho, iniciando seguidamente una lenta aproximación para terminar aferrándolas por la boca tras un rápido movimiento. Para ello frecuenta los aledaños de las farolas encendidas donde se concentran gran número de insectos. Trepa con excelente facilidad por cualquier tipo de superficie, incluido el cristal, gracias a la especial constitución de sus dedos. Adopta una actitud agresiva ante la presencia de otros congéneres en su territorio, a base de mordiscos. Posee la facultad de la autotomía, por la que puede desprender parte de su cola si ésta ha quedado aprisionada (por algún predador, por ejemplo) y facilitar de este modo su huida. El apéndice fracturado se convulsiona repetidamente, distrayendo la atención de su enemigo y siendo regenerado en poco tiempo. |
