BREVE REPASO HISTÓRICO DE “LA CATEDRAL DE LA MANCHUELA”
Cuenta la leyenda, que hace años, cierto personaje de gran importancia, en uno de sus viajes, al acercarse a Alborea, comentó con admiración: «¡Pero, ¿dónde está el pueblo de esta Catedral?!», prediciendo la actual denominación que se da a la Iglesia de Alborea como «Catedral de la Manchuela».
Las primeras noticias que tenemos sobre nuestra «Catedral» datan del año 1.6.74, fecha de la bendición de la Capilla y el Altar Mayor. Esta enorme construcción de planta octogonal cerrada por la Cúpula o Media Naranja que conforma la cabecera de la Iglesia, será la base de toda la edificación, que se irá desarrollando a lo largo del siglo XVIII hasta mediados del XIX. Durante el siglo XVIII, la Iglesia alcanzó su máximo esplendor y riqueza, apoyada por la existencia de varias Cofradías y Hermandades que contribuían con su dinero. La Iglesia pertenecía a la Diócesis de Cartagena y las gentes del pueblo seguían las normas religiosas y sociales que se dictaban desde allí.
La prosperidad que vivía el pueblo se dejó sentir cuando llegó el momento de realizar nuevas obras en el edificio. Se contrata a importantes «Maestros de Alarife», como se les denominaba en la época, «Maestros de cantería», «de herrero», etc. para construir la torre, capillas y sacristía que van a dar forma definitiva a la Iglesia que todos conocemos.
1.722: «Obra de la Torre: 9.222 reales pagados a los Maestros de la Torre Juan Ruiz Pérez y Francisco Palacios y Zella, y 37 obreros a cuenta de los 14.500 reales del importe total».
Tampoco se repara en gastos a la hora de realizar cualquier tipo de reparación o mejora arquitectónica que mantuviese o incrementase el carácter monumental dado en un principio del edificio.
El interior de la Iglesia se decora en estilo «rococó», el preferido en ese momento -finales del siglo XVIII hasta mediados del siglo XIX-, destacando la construcción en estos años de la Capilla del Rosario, y la participación en las obras de Felipe Motilla, «Maestro Arquitecto», famoso en la época; así como la decoración del Camarín situado detrás de dicha Capilla, donde aún se conservan (aunque en muy mal estado) las pinturas murales que se realizaron dedicadas a ensalzar la figura de la Virgen María como Madre de Dios.
Destacan en estas pinturas la representación del Nacimiento de Jesús, el descanso en la huida a Egipto y el descendimiento de la Cruz, mereciendo este Camarín, por su decoración y significado, un detallado estudio y una mejor conservación.
También se tiene constancia de las obras de imagenería, esculturas y cuadros que se compraron para decorar las diferentes dependencias del edificio.
Poco a poco, a través de los años, la Iglesia, al igual que el pueblo, ha ido perdiendo, por distintas causas, poder y riqueza; en la actualidad se la ha rescatado casi de las ruinas, siendo declarada oficialmente monumento histórico-artístico, y se le ha dado la denominación de «Catedral de la Manchuela», comenzando las obras de restauración arquitectónica.
Aunque breve, que este pequeño repaso histórico sirva para recordar a todos el singular edificio que tenemos como obra representativa del espíritu religioso y cultural de las gentes de Alborea; dicen que en el pasado está nuestra identidad, vamos a intentar entre todos mantener con fuerza el espíritu de un pueblo que fue capaz de construirse como Iglesia Parroquial una auténtica Catedral.
